International Women’s Day 2011

On March 8th Afghan women and men from Balkh celebrated the 2011 International Women’s Day celebration at the Women’s Garden in Mazar-e-Sharif. As part of a program run by the Cooperation Centre for Afghanistan, the Goethe Institute and the Journalism Department of Balkh University, my colleague Zia Ferozpur and I worked with a group of photojournalists and photojournalism students (about 3/4 of them young women) over eight sessions to put together an exhibit in honour of the day.

This exhibition dedicated to women’s issues is, I’ve been told, the first of its kind in Mazar. I am sure it won’t be the last!!  We are working to get the images up in an online gallery with journalist bios, but I wanted to give you a sneak peek.
